Traveling with pet to and around Russia

Russia is a pet friendly country.

Rules for the transportation of pets and animals across the state border of Russia.

You may order the forms and instructions for taking your pet to the Russian Federation online - scroll to the bottom of this page for ordering instructions.

ARRIVING BY AIR - At the present time you must clear customs with your pet at either of the two Moscow airports. St. Petersburg and other airports in Russia do not have customs clearance facilities for pets.

FROM ABROAD: Owners can transport up to 2 dogs or cats. You need a veterinary certificate indicating that the animals are clinically healthy and vaccinated against rabies. Vaccination must be performed no earlier than 30 days and no more than 12 months before the departure. Upon arrival you will register your pet at the airport veterinary office for a fee that is currently 400 rubles.

You can then enter the Russian Federation, and trvel to the other States of the Federation with your pet.

WITHIN THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION TERRITORY: Domestic animals are transported together with the established veterinary certificate with the note of the airport veterinary service. You can learn the conditions of transportation (cage, prices, etc.) with the airline representatives when buying tickets.

Before traveling with your pet...

* Have your pet micro chipped - The microchip is a small device about the size of a grain of rice. All EU countries as well as many other countries require that your pet have a microchip that meets ISO Standards.
It is inserted into the pet in the area of the shoulder. A vet can carry this out and it is not painful for the animal. If your pet is ever separated from you while traveling, the shelters and/or veterinarians would be able to read the chip.

* Rabies vaccination - Have your pet vaccinated against rabies after being microchipped. There is no exemption from this requirement, even if the animal already had been vaccinated.

* Blood test - After a sufficient waiting period, your vet should test your animal to make sure that the rabies vaccination has succeeded in giving sufficient protection. That waiting period may vary from a few weeks to a month or more, depending upon the specific vaccine used. Your vet can advise you about this.

* Tick and tapeworm treatment
Remember when traveling with your pet to bring water, your pet's medical records, and ID. Do not feed your pet a few hours before traveling, and make sure you take frequent pit stops so your dog can take walks.

Traveling to Mexico with your pet

To bring your pet to Mexico, you will need 2 pieces of paper: vaccination certificate to ensure your pet has been vaccinated against rabies, hepatitis, pip and leptospirosis; and office health certificate that must be issued by a veterinarian no more than 72 hours before entering Mexico. To bring more than 2 pets into Mexico, you'll need a permission of the local Mexican consulate. There is no quarantine period for pets entering Mexico. Before taking off, check with the airline regarding any restrictions they might have.
